This summer thousands of football fans will be pouring into scores of pubs and bars to watch the World Cup with friends. But for people with learning difficulties finding a place to enjoy the big-match atmosphere can be far more difficult.
Stephen Brown, of Spire Preston Supported Housing, in Watling Street Road, Fulwood, believes many of the adults he works with would love to watch the game in a communal setting.
But he says they are put off by packed pubs.
Stephen, families and service development worker, is appealing for anyone who might be able to provide a room in a pub or hall, where he can form a World Cup friendship group.
He said: "Sadly a lot of people with learning disabilities can struggle to form friendships and build relationships, sometimes due to a lack of social skills, but often due to a lack of social activities for them to attend.
"In response to that we are currently in the process of creating friendship groups.
"We want to host a World Cup friendship group in a bar, pub social club or hall, so people with disabilities can watch the game in a safe environment without having to worry about drunken behaviour."
Stephen said he realises many bars will be operating at full capacity, but he hopes someone may have a side room spare.
He said: "With the games falling mostly on a Friday and Saturday nights, this is when pubs and club are going to make a whole load of money.
"We are searching for anywhere with a spare function room or a licensed hall that is wheelchair accessible, that we could use during the days of the England games."
If anyone can help contact Stephen on 01772 524567.
