Spire: Family Led Supported Living

Spire is a not for profit charitable organisation designed to increase accommodation and support options to learning disabled adults and their families living in Preston, Lancashire and its surrounding district. We aim to ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to live in the accommodation of their choice, in the community of their choice.

Our main priority is to actively listen to the aspirations of the adult with a learning disability and as reasonably practicable, enable them to achieve such desires. Often such aspirations are small in nature but are often ignored by inflexible services.

We strive to ensure that the adult with the learning disability is involved in every stage of the planning process, regardless of the severity of the learning disability.

Spire also works closely with all the significant people in the individual's life to ensure a high quality, consistent service is provided.

In order to meet an individual's need we will work in partnership with families, friends, Advocates, Housing Associations, Social Services, Health Authorities and voluntary organisations within Preston and District.

A Brief History

Spire was founded in 1998 by a group of parents who had sons / daughters with a learning disability. All of the parents were concerned about what the future held for their sons and daughters once they were no longer able to care for them.

With advice and assistance from various bodies the parents successfully formed a group to become a not for profit charitable organisation, aiming to be a high quality service provider of care and support to adults with a learning disability in Preston and district.

In 1999 Spire received a substantial sum of money from a successful National Lottery Charities Bid. This money was used to set up an administrative office at Preston Business Centre on Watling Street Road, Preston.

As of January 2010, Spire had ten tenants living in five supported living environments and five outreach projects. The organisation had grown to employ over 45 members of staff.

Although Spire is family led, people wishing to apply for support from Spire are not obliged to become Committee members. Committee membership is purely optional.
